Reignited and IINspired!
I'm freshly back from an amazing weekend at the IIN MegaConference and I've got to say...I am pumped up! I love my job and my life and yet sometimes you just need a little pick-me-up. Well, there's nothing like a good dose of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition to get you feeling vibrant and down right giddy! From the opening stretch to Mark Sisson's praise of meat, David Wolfe's superfood freak-out and Geneen Roth's inspiring incantation of body love, I felt more connected, more alive and more inspired than I have in months!
I get asked about my school a lot. Questions like, "What was it like?", "How was the curriculum?," "Did you feel well supported?" and my answers are always, "It was amazing!", "The curriculum rocks" and "There is more support than you know what to do with." What I appreciate about IIN is their belief that one person's food is another's poison and subsequently flood their curriculum with hundred of cutting edge food theories that provide the knowledgefor you to make your own informed food decisions. Yes, independent thinking is encouraged!
The speaker line up was brilliant and certainly a reflection of the many hot (and contradictory) dietary theories of the day:

- John Robbins, The Food Revolution and Diet for a New America
And though we conference goers all hoped for a showdown between meat lover Mark Sisson and Vegan Authority Paul Pitchford, there was one things each speaker agreed upon. You guessed it, the terrifying dangers of SUGAR! Now I talk about sugar a lot, but here are just few sugar shocking takeaways:
- Sugar affects the opiate receptors in the brain making us quickly in need of more
- Sugar is 4x more addictive than cocaine (University of Bordeaux, 2007)
- High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is 2x more addictive than sucrose
- HFCS, like alcohol, creates fatty liver disease (cirrhosis of the liver)
Though I've been taking about the dangers of sugar for years, the Mega Conference was a beautiful reminder of how important our job as eaters and drinkers is. We are literally rocking and changing the world, one bite at a time and when we openly and honestly choose to stop buying conventionally raised GMO produce and meat, drinking soda and eating candy, our collective voices shout loud and clear, "We choose health and happiness!"
