What if journaling changed everything?

So, during the 6 years of my married life I rarely journaled. Sometimes I’d put pen to paper to brainstorm but journaling felt like an indulgent waste of time that didn’t seem to get me any closer to my GOALS. “Who’s got time to journal when there’s work to be done?”, I thought.

Then, KABOOM, my marriage blew up and in the aftershocks of that earthquake I realized I had a lot of intense unacknowledged feelings that had to go somewhere...FAST.

And when you’re face to face with a transition, whether it’s a divorce, a career change, wanting a partner, moving, having a child or trying to find compassion and be kinder to yourself, it’s hard to know where to start.

Enter journaling.

For the first year of my separation my routine was to RPJ: Rise, Pee, Journal. (Though some mornings I just went straight to the pages).

Journaling became a way to name what I was feelings and bring relief to what felt like a high-speed game of pingpong in my brain.

Now, years later, journaling has become a sweet refuge where I address what’s happening in my life to help me question, get curious and grow.

Lots of people journal. Oprah does it. Thomas Jefferson was famous for it and President Obama is all about it.

Journaling a go-to activity for both history figures and seeker-types like you and me because it’s a low stakes way to get relief and insight into what’s on our mind and swirling around our heart.

It give us wide blank space to let whatever we’re feeling be OK without judgment, criticism or expectations and creates an opening for our inner wisdom to come through after we’ve written out all the sh*t blocking its way.

And even though many of us want to journal, we don’t. We have all kinds of reasons why we don't take time for writing and yet, when we do, we always feel better.

We feel lighter. More expressed. More connected.  We experience more peace in our heart, feel clearer about our path, and more accepting of our experience.

And the thing about journaling is it doesn’t have to be an epic endeavor. Just 10 minutes a day is enough to let off the steam of life that’s been building up.
